Master Bedroom Ceiling

You know how the public spaces in your house seem to get fixed up first, while places like the master bedroom get put off until later? Well, that’s been the case in my home. It’s a little embarrassing to admit, but very little decorating has been done to my bedroom in the 5 years that we’ve lived here. Yes, five years of knockdown texture, builder’s white paint, and a huge tray ceiling with a very 80’s version of stain!

We’ve installed hardwood floors and had the walls skim coated and primed. So, I thought I’d work on the ceiling next. First, I started by applying a plaster to the ceiling inset. I chose a blue/gray shade of plaster and alternated it with a translucent white shade. I think it turned out very ethereal and cloud-like. It’s very restful. It looks darker in the first and the last pictures than it actually is. I’m a work-in-progress when it comes to photography skills!

Next, I painted the wood panels and trim in Annie Sloan Chalk Paint (Old White). Then, I added a stencil detail (from Victoria Larsen Stencils) to the longest panels on each side and sanded each one back so that it looked a little worn off.

I also had my husband hang a chandelier to replace the hideous fixture that was there before.

I’m very happy with how it turned out. It’s peaceful and serene with a bit of French flair.

Next, it’s on to the walls and then the dresser. After the walls are finished, I’ll add a headboard that I’ve updated and plan to show in an upcoming tutorial.

So, how about you? Are you also guilty of putting the public spaces in your home first, while neglecting your master bedroom, bath, or closet? Maybe it’s time for an update!
